About me

Shahan Mufti is a journalist and educator. His work has been published by Harper’s, Wired, The New York Times Magazine, Bloomberg Businessweek, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, and many others.

Shahan chairs the Journalism department at the University of Richmond. He has more than a decade of experience teaching journalism in higher education institutions.

Previously, Shahan was  daily news reporter for the Christian Science Monitor. He later joined the team of journalists that launched GlobalPost, an online portal for international news.

Shahan is a graduate of New York University, Middlebury College, and the United World College of the American West. He served as a Fulbright scholar in India in 2004 and 2005 .

Shahan’s first book, The Faithful Scribe, is about the cultural and religious roots of modern Pakistan and was published in September, 2013 by Other Press. His second book American Caliph won the 2020 J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award.

He lives with his wife and children in Richmond, Virginia.
